Publisher
NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS)
Description
Hospital admission figures and European age-standardised admission rates per 100,000 population.
Measure
Hospital admissions
Numerator
All hospital admissions where patient class = 1 (ordinary inpatient) or 2 (day case)
Denominator
Resident population, the denominators having been derived from mid-yr estimates supplied by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Limits
95% upper and lower confidence limits are shown. These were calculated using the method proposed by Dobson in the 1991 paper "Confidence Intervals for weighted sums of Poisson parameters" Statistics in Medicine 1991;10:457-462
Method of Aggregation
European age-standardised rate (per 100,000), directly age standardised using the European standard population (2013). Please note changes from previous Health Maps Wales publications. For this release, data has been standardised using the new 2013 European Standard population. Eurostat, the statistical institute of the European Union, decided at the end of 2012 to bring the artificial European Standard population (ESP) structure up to date. The new ESP has replaced the existing 1976 ESP. This change will cause age-standardised rates to increase in most cases because the new ESP gives much greater weight to older age-groups to better reflect the ageing population. As most deaths/hospital admissions occur at older ages, mortality and admission rates will generally be higher when calculated with the 2013 ESP compared to the 1976 ESP. The data produced here is therefore not directly comparable to previous publications (which were calculated using 1976 ESP), and the newly produced figures within this report should be used when looking at any trend type analysis. Data Quality Note
Following a review of the requirement for daycase flagging in the APC dataset and discussions between Welsh Government and NWIS, daycase flagging was decommissioned from the national APC dataset on 1 September 2014. As a result, reports based on the APC dataset were revised on 5th August 2015 so that they were based on the patient classification code submitted by providers and not a patient classification derived using the daycase flagging routine. This affected only a very small amount of daycase episodes for 2013/14 (0.05% of all Welsh provider episodes) that would have been reclassified to regular day attenders. However, it should be noted that figures for 2013/14 (and all revised figures back to 2004/05) are not directly comparable with those published prior to this date.
